Vaccinations

The Müller and Weber families are going on vacation: Which vaccinations are necessary for a boarding kennel?

The Müller and Weber families have decided to take some time out during their next vacation. Unfortunately, they can’t find anyone to look after their beloved pets during this time. They have therefore decided to take their cat Mira and dog Rocky to a boarding kennel. Boarding kennels offer ideal care for pets while their owners are away, but there are certain requirements that must be met before the animals can be taken in. It is particularly important that the animals are healthy, free from disease and fully vaccinated. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, the two families started early to find out about the necessary vaccinations.

Here are the steps they take to ensure that their animals meet all the necessary requirements

  1. Clarification of requirements

To make sure that your pet has all the necessary vaccinations, you must first ask the boarding kennel about the exact requirements. This is because requirements can vary depending on the boarding kennel. Some boarding kennels have stricter regulations than others, and it is important to find out in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

  1. Vaccinations for cats

For cats, there are usually certain core vaccinations that are required by boarding kennels. These include:

  • Cat flu (feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus)
  • Feline panleukopenia

In addition, a leukosis vaccination is often required. Another important prerequisite for Mira’s admission to the boarding kennel is a negative leukosis test, which proves that she is not infected with the leukosis virus. This test is quick and uncomplicated: A small amount of blood is taken by the vet and tested for the virus within 10 minutes. If the test is negative, a “negative” sticker is placed in Mira’s vaccination card and this test does not need to be repeated, even if she goes back to a boarding kennel in the future.

The Weber families must therefore ensure that Mira has up-to-date vaccinations for cat flu, cat flu and leukosis. The cat flu and leukosis vaccinations must have been given no more than one year ago and the negative leukosis test must be carried out before the cat is given away.

An additional point that should not be forgotten: If a cat is missing a leukosis vaccination (e.g. domestic cats that have never been vaccinated against leukosis), it is important to know that two vaccinations three weeks apart are required for complete protection. After the second vaccination, a three-week waiting period must be observed before the cat can be safely admitted to the kennel.

  1. Vaccinations for dogs

Similar regulations apply to dogs, with boarding kennels generally requiring the following core vaccinations:

  • Distemper
  • Adenovirus
  • Parvovirus
  • Parainfluenza

Vaccination against kennel cough is also required. The Nobivac KC vaccine, which is administered as a nasal spray, is specifically required here.

One particular point that the Müller family must bear in mind is that when Rocky receives the KC vaccination for the first time, it must be given at least three weeks before he is handed over to the boarding kennel. This is because it takes a while for the dog’s immune system to react to the vaccination and build up sufficient protection.

Conclusion

In order for the Müller and Weber families to ensure that their pets Mira and Rocky are accepted at the boarding kennel without any problems, it is essential that all vaccinations are brought up to date in good time. It is worth clarifying the requirements of the boarding kennel well in advance and planning the necessary tests and vaccinations with sufficient time before the trip. This way, both families can enjoy their vacation without worry, while their pets are in good hands.
